This makes it more difficult to know what the true count is because a player will never be able to account for those cards in the cushion that never get used. The cushion is how many cards are left in the shoe. So a dealer will deal cards and once the cut card is drawn from the shoe the dealer will complete the hand and then end the shoe.ĭepends on the game but the dealer puts the cut card in the deck to show when the shoe will be finished. The cut card symbolizes when the shoe is completed. There is no edge then and the player is just gonna bail. We will just change the limit to $15 min and 15 max. If all this fails we will just change the limit. I've never seen it myself but a pit boss told me once that his old boss would just yell out random numbers trying to mess them up. Or the pit boss will just sit there and talk to the person hoping to mess up their count. Meaning that at the next shuffle, when I cut the deck for my cushion, rather than cutting at 1 deck, I'll cut at 3 or even 4 decks so the shoe is smaller and there is less opportunity for the count to get high. A pit boss will come over and tell me to cut deep. And most of the time we dont even kick them out. Important to remember it's not illegal to count cards. Even if their lips arent moving, paying too close attention to each card can be a sign. I really obvious sign is them moving their lips as the cards are sent out, like counting in their head but and lips are moving saying plus 1, minus 1. If a player suddenly UPS their bet drastically That is going to send up the bat signal.

I don't know of any definitive way but there are definitely signs.
